Faf Du Plessis Calls Gambhir "The Villain" — Then Explains Why That Is the Highest Praise

Faf praises Gambhir's high standards and competitive edge despite calling him opponents' villain.

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has described India head coach Gautam Gambhir as a “villain in the story” for opponents, while praising his leadership qualities and impact on the game. His remarks offer a candid perspective on Gambhir’s competitive persona on the field.

Du Plessis noted that Gambhir’s aggressive and uncompromising approach often makes him a difficult opponent, but one who commands respect. He emphasised that Gambhir does not seek approval or popularity, instead focusing on maintaining high standards within his team.

Gambhir’s leadership credentials are well established, having captained Kolkata Knight Riders to two Indian Premier League titles and later guiding them to another championship as a mentor in 2024. His success extends to international cricket as well, where he played key roles in India’s victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup.

As head coach, Gambhir has continued to deliver results, overseeing India’s triumphs in the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup. Du Plessis credited him for instilling discipline and accountability, traits he believes are essential for sustained success.

Highlighting Gambhir’s leadership style, Du Plessis said that strong leaders demand consistency and do not tolerate a drop in standards. He added that Gambhir’s influence was evident in how he transformed Kolkata Knight Riders into a formidable unit during his tenure.

While opponents may view him as combative, Du Plessis concluded that Gambhir’s record speaks for itself, and his ability to set benchmarks and build competitive teams makes him one of the most effective leaders in modern cricket.
