Ex-India Star Reveals Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Were Advising as Team Missed Senior Players
Kaif praises Kohli and Rohit for mentoring young bowlers, flags absence of Shami.
In the recent India vs South Africa ODI in Ranchi, senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma showcased stellar performances, with Kohli scoring a century and Rohit hitting a half-century. Former India Cricketer Mohammad Kaif lauded their leadership, noting how both veterans actively guided young bowlers on the field. Kaif emphasized that such mentorship plays a vital role in nurturing emerging talent within the Indian cricket team.
Kaif highlighted specific examples of Kohli and Rohit advising bowler Harshit Rana during the match, helping him adjust his bowling lengths effectively. He also recalled similar interactions between Kohli and other young pacers like Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna, underlining how senior players support the team's overall success beyond personal achievements.
However, Kaif expressed concerns over the continued absence of experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami from the squad. Despite the rest given to other senior pacers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, Shami has yet to be included. Kaif pointed out Shami’s ability to perform well on any pitch and the crucial role he plays in guiding young bowlers through pressure situations.

According to Kaif, the lack of a senior pacer like Shami limits the support system for young pace bowlers such as Prasidh, Harshit, and Arshdeep, who could greatly benefit from his experience both on and off the field. Kaif’s comments add to the ongoing discussion about team balance and the importance of experienced players in India’s fast bowling unit.
