Ex-India Star Guarantees Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma Will Play 2027 World Cup

Former India star backs Kohli-Rohit for 2027 World Cup

Speculation over the future of India’s senior batting duo Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the 2027 ODI World Cup continues to dominate cricket discussions, but former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has firmly backed both players, insisting that their experience, adaptability and fitness discipline make them strong contenders for another World Cup campaign.

The debate around their long-term future has intensified since India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, where both Kohli and Rohit played pivotal roles in guiding the team to the final. India’s dominant run through the tournament highlighted the pair’s continued relevance at the highest level, even as questions emerged about age, workload management and the team’s transition planning for the next ICC cycle.

Despite India falling short in the final, both senior batters finished the tournament among the team’s most consistent performers. Their ability to deliver under pressure once again reinforced their value in knockout scenarios, with Kohli anchoring innings and Rohit providing aggressive starts at the top of the order. Since then, discussions within cricket circles have increasingly focused on whether they can maintain similar standards through to 2027, particularly in demanding overseas conditions such as South Africa.

Both players have publicly expressed their ambition to compete in another World Cup, keeping alive the possibility of a prolonged international career. Kohli, who was part of India’s victorious 2011 World Cup squad, remains one of the most experienced batters in ODI cricket, while Rohit continues to chase his first ODI World Cup title as a player despite multiple successful campaigns as captain in limited-overs formats.

Backing the duo, Mohammad Kaif has said he has “no doubts” about their ability to remain part of India’s core plans. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif emphasised that Rohit Sharma’s evolving batting approach and renewed focus on fitness are key factors that could extend his career at the international level. He suggested that Rohit has become more measured in his shot selection, relying less on high-risk stroke play and more on controlled aggression, which could help him sustain performance over time.

Kaif further noted that Rohit’s mindset has matured significantly, particularly in how he manages his innings as both a captain and a batter. According to him, this shift has made Rohit more adaptable to different match situations, reducing the physical and mental strain associated with consistently high-tempo batting. He also highlighted that injury concerns are not exclusive to senior players, arguing that fitness outcomes depend more on preparation and workload management than age alone.

On Virat Kohli, Kaif pointed to his consistency, discipline and unmatched competitiveness as indicators that he can remain effective well into the next World Cup cycle. Kohli’s ability to maintain high fitness standards and adapt his game across formats has long been regarded as one of his defining strengths, and supporters believe this could allow him to extend his ODI career further than many contemporaries.

Kaif’s comments reflect a broader sentiment within Indian cricket circles, where the balance between transition and experience remains a key discussion point. While younger players continue to emerge, the presence of seasoned performers like Kohli and Rohit is still viewed as crucial in high-pressure tournaments. With the 2027 World Cup cycle gradually taking shape, selection decisions are expected to weigh both long-term planning and the proven track record of India’s most experienced match-winners.
