Ex-England Footballer Compares Argentina's Messi Bond With Portugal's Ronaldo Relationship
Former England footballer compares Messi and Ronaldo's national team bonds.
Former England footballer John Barnes has questioned Portugal's continued reliance on Cristiano Ronaldo, suggesting the national team may need to reconsider building its campaign around the veteran forward. Barnes also drew a comparison with Argentina's relationship with Lionel Messi, claiming the bond between the World Cup winners and their captain is markedly different from Portugal's dynamic with Ronaldo.
Speaking about Portugal's performances at the FIFA World Cup, Barnes said Argentina's players appear to rally around Messi in a way that has helped the team succeed on the biggest stage. "Argentina players love Lionel Messi; it's different with Cristiano Ronaldo at Portugal," Barnes said, arguing that the emotional connection and collective belief surrounding Messi have played a key role in Argentina's achievements. He suggested Portugal may not enjoy the same level of cohesion when Ronaldo is at the centre of the team's plans.
Portugal entered the tournament among the favourites to challenge for the World Cup title, but their group-stage campaign has been less convincing than expected. Draws against DR Congo and Colombia meant Roberto Martínez's side finished second in their group, raising questions about their form and consistency ahead of the knockout rounds. While Portugal progressed to the last 16, their performances have fuelled debate over whether they can compete with the tournament's strongest teams.

Much of the scrutiny has focused on Ronaldo, who, at 41, has started every match and completed the full 90 minutes in each outing. Although the five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored twice against Uzbekistan, he has otherwise struggled to make a decisive impact as Portugal's attack has lacked its usual fluency. Barnes questioned whether Portugal should continue centring the team around the veteran striker, warning that his guaranteed place in the starting lineup could become a difficult issue for the coaching staff to manage as the competition intensifies.
Ronaldo remains one of football's most decorated players and continues to play a prominent role for Portugal despite his age. However, discussions over succession planning and balancing experience with emerging talent have persisted in recent years. Portugal boasts a squad featuring several established stars and promising youngsters, leading some pundits to argue that the team should gradually reduce its dependence on its long-time captain while maintaining his leadership qualities.
With the knockout stage presenting significantly tougher opposition, Portugal will need an improved collective performance to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Ronaldo, meanwhile, will be eager to silence his critics by delivering influential displays when the stakes are highest. Whether Portugal continues to build its attack around the veteran forward or adapts its approach could prove decisive as the team pursues its first FIFA World Cup title.
