CSK Weighs Coaching Change As Dhoni-Backed Candidate Leads Race To Replace Fleming

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to appoint a new head coach after the departure of Stephen Fleming, with former Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani emerging as the frontrunner, according to a recent report. The franchise is expected to finalise Fleming’s successor by the end of September as it begins reshaping its coaching setup ahead of IPL 2027. The search has taken a different direction following reported input from former CSK captain MS Dhoni. While the franchise had initially been linked with another overseas appointment, Dhoni is understood to be pushing for an Indian-led support staff. That preference has strengthened Badani’s position in the race, although the final decision remains with the CSK ownership.

Fleming’s departure brought an end to one of the longest and most successful coaching partnerships in IPL history. He had been associated with CSK since 2008, initially as a player before becoming head coach in 2009. Under his leadership, the franchise won five IPL titles and established itself as one of the tournament’s most consistent teams. CSK mutually parted ways with Fleming after their disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. According to the report, CSK had entrusted Dhoni with a role in identifying Fleming’s replacement after the New Zealander’s exit. Dhoni has subsequently made a strong case for an Indian to lead the coaching staff. The ownership, however, continues to assess overseas options and is weighing the advantages of retaining an international coaching presence against appointing an Indian candidate with IPL experience.

Badani’s previous experience makes him a strong contender. He served as Delhi Capitals’ head coach during the 2025 and 2026 seasons and has also worked extensively in domestic and franchise cricket. His experience in the IPL and familiarity with the Indian cricket system are understood to have added weight to his candidature. He has also been associated with Southern Brave and Tamil Nadu Premier League side Chepauk Super Gillies. The possibility of an Indian-led setup comes as CSK prepares for a significant transition. Alongside Fleming’s departure, questions surrounding Dhoni’s future as a player have added another layer to the franchise’s planning for IPL 2027.

Dhoni did not play during IPL 2026, while his future role with the franchise remains a subject of speculation. Earlier reports had also discussed the possibility of him taking a coaching or mentoring position. Badani is not the only name linked with the vacancy. Former England captain Eoin Morgan has also been mentioned as a possible candidate, while former CSK batter Michael Hussey and other experienced names have featured in discussions around the coaching position. Former India coach Rahul Dravid has also been identified as a potential option in earlier reports. The decision will be particularly important for CSK after the franchise failed to reach the IPL playoffs for a third consecutive season in 2026.

Fleming’s long tenure had provided continuity, but the team’s recent struggles have prompted a reassessment of its backroom structure. With the next season approaching, CSK must now decide whether to continue with an overseas coaching model or begin a new phase under an Indian-led setup. If the reported preference for an Indian coaching structure holds, Badani’s candidacy could become increasingly difficult to overlook. His IPL experience, familiarity with Indian players and coaching background fit the direction reportedly being advocated by Dhoni. However, until CSK formally announces Fleming’s successor, the franchise’s final choice remains open, with overseas candidates still under consideration.
