Commonwealth Games President Rukare Backs Glasgow's 10-Sport 2026 Format

Commonwealth Sport President Dr Donald Rukare has expressed confidence in the future of the Commonwealth Games, backing the streamlined format of the 2026 Glasgow Games as a sustainable model for the multi-sport event. Speaking to AFP ahead of the opening ceremony, Rukare described the Games as a platform "where champions are made" and praised Glasgow for stepping in after the event faced uncertainty following the withdrawal of the Australian state of Victoria as host in July 2023 due to escalating costs. The 2026 edition will feature a reduced programme, with 10 sports and six para-sports, compared to 19 sports and eight para-sports at the 2022 Birmingham Games.

Glasgow, which previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014, agreed to stage the event using existing venues to minimise infrastructure spending and reduce the financial burden on taxpayers. The opening ceremony is scheduled to be attended by King Charles, who is expected to officially declare the Games open. Rukare said the condensed format demonstrated how the event could remain viable while continuing to provide athletes from across the Commonwealth with an important international platform, particularly those representing their nations for the first time.

Looking ahead, Rukare said the reduced programme would not become the permanent model for future editions. He indicated that Commonwealth Sport is targeting an event featuring between 15 and 18 sports in the coming years while maintaining a flexible and financially sustainable approach. Under current regulations, athletics and swimming remain the only compulsory sports, allowing future hosts greater freedom to design programmes suited to their infrastructure and financial capabilities. He emphasised that the long-term goal is to create an agile event that meets the evolving needs of athletes while ensuring the Games remain attractive to prospective host cities.

The focus will next shift to Ahmedabad, which has already been confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking the event's centenary edition. Rukare said hosting the Games in India would showcase the diversity of the Commonwealth and expand the event beyond its traditional hosts, noting that six of the last seven editions have been staged in either the United Kingdom or Australia. He added that India is well positioned to deliver a successful Games and expressed hope that future editions could also be hosted in Africa, reflecting the multicultural nature of the Commonwealth's 74 nations and territories.
