Chad Le Clos Cements Legacy as CWG's Most Decorated Athlete

South African swimming star Chad le Clos has further cemented his legacy in Commonwealth Games history by becoming the joint most decorated athlete in the competition after claiming his 20th Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow. The achievement sees him draw level with Australian swimmer Emma McKeon, adding another milestone to a career that has already included Olympic glory and multiple world titles. Despite the historic feat, the 34-year-old has indicated that he is not finished yet, with his sights now firmly set on competing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Le Clos first rose to global prominence at the 2012 London Olympics, where he stunned the sporting world by defeating American swimming legend Michael Phelps in the men's 200m butterfly, securing one of South Africa's most memorable Olympic gold medals. His success came despite swimming receiving comparatively less attention and support than sports such as cricket, rugby and football in South Africa. In the 2016 documentary Unbelievable, former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn remarked that while cricket, rugby and football were well-supported, swimming did not enjoy the same level of investment or recognition.

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, le Clos reached another landmark by winning his 20th medal after helping South Africa in the mixed medley relay finals, having also contributed during the qualification rounds. Earlier in the Games, he secured his 19th Commonwealth Games medal as part of the 4x100m freestyle relay team that claimed bronze, moving ahead of former Commonwealth Games greats Phil Adams and Mick Gault on the all-time medals list. Competing in his fifth Commonwealth Games, the veteran has continued to demonstrate remarkable consistency at the highest level.
