BWF World Championships: Ayush Shetty Falls to Alwi Farhan in Pre-Quarters

Ayush Shetty loses to Alwi Farhan, exits BWF World Championships

Indian shuttler Ayush Shetty's campaign at the BWF World Championships ended in the Round of 16 after he suffered a 19-21, 11-21 defeat against Indonesia's Alwi Farhan on Thursday. The World No. 22 had entered the contest with confidence after producing a major upset against World No. 1 Shi Yuqi earlier in the tournament. However, he could not reproduce that performance against the familiar Indonesian opponent at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Shetty started the match strongly and received loud support from the home crowd throughout the contest. He fought back impressively after falling 14-18 behind in the opening game, eventually moving ahead 19-18. However, he was unable to convert the advantage and allowed Alwi to close out the game 21-19. The Indonesian's ability to maintain his composure during the crucial closing points gave him an important advantage.

Alwi's speed and attacking style created problems for Shetty throughout the match. The Indonesian repeatedly moved quickly around the court and targeted Shetty's right hip with powerful body smashes. Shetty also appeared hesitant while attempting longer shots because of the court conditions, which resulted in several shorter lifts. Alwi took advantage of those openings and repeatedly attacked with greater confidence.

The second game proved particularly difficult for the Indian, who struggled to find a consistent rhythm. Despite instructions from the coaching team during the mid-game interval, Shetty was unable to change the momentum. Alwi continued to dictate rallies with his pace and attacking play, eventually winning the second game 21-11 to complete a straight-games victory in 45 minutes.

The defeat ended India's men's singles campaign at the championships. Lakshya Sen had also exited the competition after losing to American shuttler Garret Tan in the previous round. Shetty, who reached the Asian Badminton Championships final earlier this year, had nevertheless enjoyed a memorable run at the World Championships, particularly with his victory over top-ranked Shi Yuqi.

Alwi Farhan, meanwhile, advanced to the quarterfinal stage as the only Indonesian remaining in the men's singles draw after Jonathan Christie was eliminated by Denmark's Rasmus Gemke. For Shetty, the loss ended his hopes of a deeper run on home soil, but his victory over the world No. 1 and progress to the pre-quarterfinals marked another significant step in his developing international career.
