Bumrah Needs Time to Find Rhythm, Says Ex-Selector Sarandeep Singh

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selector Sarandeep Singh has cautioned that Jasprit Bumrah may need time to regain his rhythm after returning from injury, and may not immediately start taking wickets in the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan.

India and Afghanistan are set to face each other in the first match of the three-game series in Delhi on Sunday, with attention focused on the conditions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Sarandeep expects the venue to favour batters, pointing to its history of producing high-scoring matches during domestic competitions and major tournaments.

Discussing India's likely spin combination, Sarandeep backed Varun Chakaravarthy, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel. He said the trio offers a balance of specialist spin and all-round ability, while highlighting the importance of having both left-arm and off-spin options. He also noted that Ravi Bishnoi had been considered but had not performed strongly enough to secure the opportunity.

Sarandeep described Bumrah's return as a major boost for the Indian team. Recalling his time at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he saw the fast bowler during his rehabilitation and fitness work, he said Bumrah appeared fully fit and had bowled impressively in practice matches and simulations.

However, he stressed that expectations surrounding Bumrah must be managed because the pacer is returning from injury. Sarandeep said it would be reasonable if Bumrah does not take wickets immediately, as he may require time to rediscover his best rhythm. He added that India's other bowlers, including Arshdeep Singh, must be prepared to shoulder responsibility during this phase.

Sarandeep also praised Yash Thakur, who was brought into the squad after Harshit Rana suffered a fresh thigh strain. He said Thakur's consistent domestic performances and displays for India A had earned him the opportunity. Turning to captain Shreyas Iyer's challenges, he identified bowling changes, death-overs planning and managing the three spinners as key tactical decisions for India in the series.
