Bruno Fernandes Scores 100th Goal As Manchester United Beat Chelsea 2-1

Fernandes' milestone eases pressure on Amorim in chaotic Premier League clash.

Bruno Fernandes marked his 200th Premier League appearance with his 100th goal for Manchester United, securing a dramatic 2-1 win against Chelsea at Old Trafford on September 20, 2025. The chaotic match, which saw both teams reduced to 10 men, eased mounting pressure on manager Ruben Amorim, whose side claimed only their second victory of the 2025-26 season. Fernandes’ first-half strike and Casemiro’s header powered United to a lead, despite a late Chelsea response, lifting the Red Devils to 10th in the Premier League, one point behind sixth-placed Chelsea.

The game ignited early when Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez received a red card in the fifth minute for fouling United’s Bryan Mbeumo, leaving the Blues shorthanded. Fernandes capitalized in the 14th minute, prodding in a header from Patrick Dorgu after a VAR check, while Casemiro doubled the lead in the 37th with a close-range header. However, Casemiro’s second yellow card in stoppage time for a foul on Andrey Santos leveled the numbers, setting the stage for a tense second half. Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah scored in the 80th minute, sparking a nervy finish, but United held firm as fans roared at the final whistle.

Amorim, under scrutiny after United’s worst Premier League campaign last season and a recent 3-0 loss to Manchester City, praised the team’s fight. “Every win, especially in this moment, is important against a great opponent,” he told the BBC. “Our crowd is easy to please. If you give everything, they will be there.” The victory, witnessed by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, highlighted United’s resilience despite losing Chelsea’s Cole Palmer to a groin injury in the first half, which disrupted the visitors’ rhythm.

Elsewhere, Liverpool maintained their perfect start, defeating Everton 2-1 in the Merseyside derby, with Ryan Gravenberch scoring and assisting. West Ham’s struggles continued under Graham Potter, falling 2-1 to Crystal Palace, while Wolverhampton remained winless after a 3-1 loss to Leeds. Tottenham salvaged a 2-2 draw at Brighton, and Fulham climbed to seventh with a 3-1 win over Brentford. United now face Leicester City on September 25, with Amorim urging his squad to maintain their urgency.
