Brett Lee Picks Jacques Kallis Over Sachin Tendulkar As Cricket's Greatest Batsman

Former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee has placed Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis at the top of his all-time cricketing hierarchy, but in different categories. Lee considers Tendulkar the greatest batsman to have played the game, while he rates South Africa's Kallis as the best overall cricketer because of his extraordinary all-round record. The former pacer explained his distinction during an appearance on The Ranveer Show. Lee said Tendulkar remains his choice when the discussion is specifically about batting.  "I've always said that I think that the best batsman to ever play the game is Sachin Tendulkar," he said.

Tendulkar's record across formats and his longevity at the highest level have made him one of cricket's most celebrated figures, and Lee's assessment reflects the reputation the Indian legend built during a career spanning more than two decades. However, Lee gave the ultimate overall accolade to Kallis, citing the South African's statistical achievements and his ability to contribute in multiple disciplines.  "The best cricketer, in my opinion, is Jacques Kallis. The best numbers in the world. If you look at his stats, the stats don't lie. He's incredible," Lee said. Kallis was among the most prolific all-rounders in international cricket, combining a high-level batting record with significant contributions as a bowler.

Lee's admiration for Kallis was also shaped by personal experience. The two were teammates at Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, including during the franchise's title-winning campaign in 2012. Playing alongside Kallis allowed Lee to observe the South African away from the pressure of facing him as an opposition player and gave him a closer view of his preparation and professionalism. Kallis' reputation as an all-rounder rests on the breadth of his contribution to South Africa. He accumulated more than 25,000 international runs across Tests and ODIs and took hundreds of wickets, making him one of the few players in cricket history capable of influencing matches consistently with both bat and ball.

His record in Test cricket in particular established him as one of the format's most complete performers. Tendulkar, meanwhile, built his legacy primarily through his batting. The former India captain became the first player to score 100 international centuries and finished his career as the leading run-scorer in both Test and ODI cricket. His ability to perform against different generations of bowlers and across vastly different conditions cemented his status as one of the game's defining batsmen. Lee's distinction therefore separates two different measures of greatness.

Tendulkar's batting excellence places him at the top when the question is who was the greatest batsman, while Kallis' ability to make a substantial contribution in more than one discipline gives him the edge in Lee's assessment of the greatest complete cricketer. The former Australia pacer's opinion is particularly notable because he competed against both players and, in Kallis' case, shared a dressing room with him. His assessment highlights why comparisons between legendary players often depend on the criteria being used. For Lee, Tendulkar represents the highest standard of batting, while Kallis' extraordinary balance between batting and bowling makes him the ultimate all-round cricketer.
