Brazil's All-Time Leading Goalscorer Neymar Never Played in World Cup Final Despite 79 International Goals

Neymar has scored 79 international goals but never appeared in a World Cup final.

Brazilian football star Neymar enters the 2026 FIFA World Cup carrying one of the most remarkable records in international football, yet one major milestone continues to elude him. Despite becoming Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer with 79 international goals, the forward has never appeared in a FIFA World Cup final, a statistic that remains one of the sport's enduring talking points.

Neymar has featured in three previous World Cups before the ongoing 2026 edition and has scored eight goals in the tournament, matching the World Cup tally of Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Brazil's campaigns during his career have consistently ended before the final, leaving the country's record scorer without an appearance on football's biggest stage.

The closest Neymar came to a World Cup final was in 2014 when Brazil hosted the tournament. After scoring four goals in five matches, he suffered a fractured vertebra following a challenge from Colombia's Juan Camilo Zuniga in the quarter-finals, ruling him out of the remainder of the competition. Days later, Brazil endured a historic 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals, with Neymar forced to watch from the sidelines.

In 2018, Brazil once again entered the tournament with high expectations but exited in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 defeat to Belgium. Neymar scored twice during the campaign but was unable to guide his team beyond the last eight. Four years later in Qatar, his extra-time goal against Croatia appeared to have secured a semi-final place before Croatia equalised and eventually progressed on penalties, leaving the Brazilian captain in tears.

Neymar's World Cup record reflects both brilliance and heartbreak. He reached the semi-finals in 2014 but missed the match through injury, followed by quarter-final exits in 2018 and 2022. Despite his individual achievements and status as Brazil's leading scorer, the opportunity to compete in a World Cup final has remained just out of reach.

As Brazil continue their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after opening the tournament with a draw, Neymar has another opportunity to rewrite history. The road to the final remains open, and the 34-year-old forward will hope to finally add a World Cup final appearance to an international career already filled with records, memorable performances and unforgettable moments.
