Brandon Clarke's $64 Million NBA Career Ends at 29; Legacy Reviewed

Brandon Clarke's $64 million NBA career with Grizzlies ends at 29.

Brandon Clarke, forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, has died at the age of 29, according to confirmations issued by the franchise and his representatives on Tuesday. Clarke’s death marks the sudden end of a promising NBA career that began after he was selected in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft. The Grizzlies player had spent his entire professional career in Memphis and was widely regarded as one of the league’s most energetic and efficient young forwards.

Clarke entered the NBA after a successful college basketball career at Gonzaga University and was initially selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder before being traded to Memphis on draft night. Over the years, he developed into a valuable part of the Grizzlies’ core lineup, earning praise for his defensive versatility, rebounding ability, and efficient scoring near the basket. His early NBA seasons established him as one of the team’s most reliable contributors during Memphis’ rebuilding phase.

Financially, Clarke achieved significant success during his professional career. In 2022, he signed a four-year contract extension worth $50 million with the Grizzlies, highlighting the franchise’s long-term confidence in him. Reports indicate that Clarke signed NBA contracts totalling approximately $64.15 million throughout his career, including incentives and bonuses. For the 2025–26 season, his salary was reportedly set at around $12.5 million. Multiple US media reports estimated his net worth to be between $8 million and $12 million at the time of his death.

Clarke’s final NBA season was heavily affected by injuries, limiting both his appearances and overall impact on the court. Despite those challenges, he remained a respected figure within the organisation and among basketball fans for his work ethic and team-first mentality. His death has prompted tributes from across the basketball community, with many remembering him as an important member of the Grizzlies’ rise as a competitive team in the Western Conference.

Attention surrounding Clarke’s death has also intensified due to reports that he had recently been detained for possession of kratom, a herbal substance derived from the Mitragyna tree native to Southeast Asia. According to reports citing a probable cause affidavit from the Cross County Sheriff’s Office, authorities allegedly recovered 235.6 grams of kratom from Clarke’s vehicle during a traffic stop weeks before his death. Kratom products are legal at the federal level in the United States, although some states have banned or restricted them.

The substance has recently come under increased scrutiny in the US because of concerns over synthetic derivatives linked to opioid-like effects. Health officials, including US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, have publicly raised concerns over products containing 7-OH, a synthetic kratom-related compound sometimes referred to as “gas station heroin". However, authorities have not officially linked Clarke’s death to kratom use, and no confirmed cause of death has been publicly released at the time of publication.
