Bhuvneshwar Kumar Downplays India Comeback Hype Despite Purple Cap Form in IPL 2026

Veteran Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has downplayed growing discussions surrounding a possible return to the Indian national team despite enjoying an impressive campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season. The experienced pacer has emerged as one of the standout bowlers of the tournament, consistently delivering match-winning performances and climbing to the top of the Purple Cap standings. His strong run with the ball has reignited conversations among fans and cricket experts about whether selectors should reconsider him for international duty after nearly four years away from the Indian side.

Bhuvneshwar last represented India in 2022 before the national team management gradually shifted focus toward younger fast-bowling options. However, his performances this season have reminded many of his prime years, particularly his ability to swing the new ball and execute yorkers effectively during the death overs. Playing a crucial role for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the veteran seamer has displayed discipline, control and consistency throughout the campaign, helping his side remain firmly placed at the top of the points table with strong playoff prospects.

Despite the renewed attention around his future with the Indian team, Bhuvneshwar maintained a calm and composed stance while speaking about the speculation. In a video shared by RCB, the pacer explained that he no longer focuses on long-term goals or comeback plans, saying such expectations had rarely worked in his favour earlier in his career. Instead, he expressed satisfaction over his achievements, including playing more than 200 matches and succeeding in both powerplay and death-over situations across formats over the years.

The veteran cricketer added that while he acknowledges the success he is enjoying in IPL 2026, he does not view the current phase as anything extraordinary. According to Bhuvneshwar, his present performances are largely the result of years of hard work, experience and persistence through both successful and difficult phases of his career. He admitted that the memories and accomplishments may feel more special once his playing days are over, but for now he considers his achievements part of the normal rhythm of professional cricket.

So far this season, Bhuvneshwar has claimed 21 wickets in 11 matches and has been instrumental in RCB’s strong campaign. His ability to strike early with the new ball while maintaining composure under pressure in the final overs has made him one of the most reliable bowlers in the tournament. Analysts and former players have praised the veteran for adapting his game intelligently despite advancing age, with many pointing to his experience and tactical awareness as key strengths behind his resurgence.

Speaking further about his current form, Bhuvneshwar stated that his overall approach to cricket has remained largely unchanged even though he has been away from international competition. He credited additional focus on training, recovery and workload management for helping him stay sharp physically and mentally. The pacer also noted that the longer breaks he gets outside the IPL schedule allow him to recharge and spend time away from the game, which he believes has contributed positively to maintaining balance and consistency during the ongoing season.
