BCCI's Two-Year Ban Not Enough: Overseas Player Availability Remains Critical Issue in IPL 2026

The Punjab Kings owner flags overseas player availability as a sensitive issue affecting IPL franchise planning.

Punjab Kings co-owner Mohit Burman has raised concerns over the availability of overseas players during the Indian Premier League, describing the issue as a “sensitive” matter that affects team planning and tournament balance. Burman said better coordination is needed between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), foreign cricket boards, and other stakeholders to ensure that overseas cricketers remain available for the full duration of the IPL season.

The comments come at a time when player withdrawals and partial availability continue to impact franchises despite regulations introduced by the BCCI. The governing body currently imposes a two-year ban on overseas players who withdraw from the IPL after being purchased at the auction, except in cases involving injury or medical reasons. However, franchises still face uncertainty regarding player commitments because of international schedules and workload management policies.

Burman pointed out that inconsistent player availability makes long-term planning difficult for teams, particularly when franchises invest heavily in overseas stars during the auction. He noted that squads are built around specific combinations and strategies, and sudden absences can disrupt the balance of the side during crucial stages of the tournament.

One recent example involved Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who was reportedly cleared by Cricket Australia to participate only in the latter half of the ongoing IPL season. By the time he became available, Delhi Capitals were already struggling in the competition, limiting the potential impact of his inclusion. The situation once again highlighted the challenges IPL franchises face in managing player availability throughout the season.

The IPL remains the world’s most valuable and widely watched T20 cricket league, attracting top international talent every year. However, scheduling conflicts with bilateral series, national duties, workload concerns, and international board policies continue to create complications for franchises. Burman’s remarks are expected to renew discussions on whether stronger agreements between the IPL and foreign cricket boards are needed to provide greater certainty for teams and players alike.
