Balogun Avoids Suspension As FIFA Overturns Red Card After Trump’s Intervention
FIFA reverses Balogun ban after Trump call.
FIFA has lifted the red-card suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun, allowing him to feature in the World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium, a decision that has triggered controversy and political attention after reports that US President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino over the matter.
Balogun had been shown a red card during the United States’ 2-0 Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a challenge in which he stepped awkwardly on the right ankle of defender Tarik Muharemović. The dismissal automatically triggered a one-match suspension under FIFA regulations, ruling him out of the next knockout fixture. However, FIFA announced on Sunday that the suspension had been overturned following a review, making the striker eligible to play.
According to reports, Trump spoke with Infantino after the match, urging FIFA to review the decision. A person familiar with the matter said the call took place shortly after the incident and requested a reassessment of the red card. The conversation has drawn scrutiny as it coincided with FIFA’s subsequent disciplinary reversal, which is highly unusual in World Cup history.

The decision has been strongly criticised by Belgium’s football authorities. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) said it was “astonished” by the ruling, questioning the fairness and consistency of FIFA’s disciplinary process. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia also mocked the decision, suggesting it undermines the credibility of tournament regulations and the standard application of red-card suspensions in international football.
Balogun, who has scored three goals in the tournament so far, is a key figure in the US attack and has played a central role in their progress to the knockout stages. His availability for the Belgium match is seen as a major boost for the host nation, which is aiming to advance further in the competition. Under standard FIFA rules, a red card typically results in at least a one-match ban, subject to appeal in exceptional cases reviewed by disciplinary committees. The development has intensified debate over the independence of FIFA’s disciplinary system, particularly in high-profile tournaments like the World Cup.
While FIFA has not publicly detailed the reasoning behind the reversal, the timing has raised questions among observers and competing teams about transparency and consistency in decision-making. As the United States prepares for its knockout fixture, attention is now focused not only on Balogun’s role on the pitch but also on the broader implications of the ruling. With Belgium expressing clear dissatisfaction and scrutiny mounting over the process, the episode is likely to remain a talking point as the World Cup progresses.
