Australia Coach Confirms Cameron Green’s Skills Are Back After Strong KKR Showing in IPL 2026
Australia coach happy with Cameron Green’s skill revival at KKR.
Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has expressed satisfaction with the gradual return to form of all-rounder Cameron Green following his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he represented Kolkata Knight Riders during the 2026 season. McDonald said the franchise-based T20 tournament has helped the player regain confidence after a significant injury setback. Green was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹25.2 crore (approximately USD 2.8 million) ahead of the season but had a slow start, particularly with the ball. He did not bowl in the initial matches of the campaign, a decision that drew criticism from sections of fans and also raised questions within team circles about his utilisation in the squad.
His batting form also took time to stabilise in the early phase of the tournament. However, as the league progressed into its second half, Green began contributing more consistently, eventually finishing the season with 322 runs at an average of 32.20 and a strike rate of 145.70. He also picked up seven wickets across 14 matches, though he maintained an economy rate of 10.64. Despite his improved all-round performance, Kolkata Knight Riders were unable to secure a place in the playoffs. Their campaign ended with a 40-run defeat to Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens, a result that summed up an inconsistent season in which they struggled to recover momentum in the early stages.
Speaking to cricket.com.au, McDonald said the IPL experience has been valuable in helping Green rediscover his “white-ball skills” following back surgery in 2024. He noted that the demands of playing across formats remain challenging, particularly for players returning from long-term injuries who are expected to maintain high performance levels in all conditions. McDonald, who himself has previously been involved in the IPL as a player with Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, suggested that expectations on modern all-rounders may be excessive. He questioned whether players like Green are being asked to consistently deliver across all three formats at a level that is increasingly difficult to sustain.

The Australia coach added that Green’s gradual improvement in the IPL should be seen in the context of recovery and workload management, rather than immediate statistical output alone. He said the key focus now is on building long-term durability and ensuring that the all-rounder is fully prepared for upcoming international commitments. Green is now set to join Australia’s ODI squad for a three-match series in Pakistan beginning May 30, where his form and fitness will again be closely monitored as part of his ongoing return to full international duties.
