Auston Matthews’ Future With Maple Leafs Gets Major Darren Dreger Update

Darren Dreger shared a significant update on Auston Matthews’ Maple Leafs future.

Speculation surrounding the future of Auston Matthews with the Toronto Maple Leafs has intensified following another disappointing playoff campaign, but NHL insider Darren Dreger says there is currently little indication that the star captain is preparing to request a trade this offseason.

Speaking on TSN’s “OverDrive,” Dreger dismissed suggestions that Matthews intends to force his way out of Toronto unless the franchise unexpectedly commits to a full-scale rebuild. According to Dreger, the Maple Leafs still possess a strong mix of experienced talent, emerging young players, and future assets that should allow the team to remain competitive in the coming years without entering a major restructuring phase.

Toronto’s long-term plans have also been strengthened by securing the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, a development viewed across the league as a significant boost to the franchise’s future outlook. The organization continues to rely on a veteran core that includes William Nylander and John Tavares, while younger contributors such as Matthew Knies are increasingly becoming important parts of the roster alongside Matthews.

The Maple Leafs are also believed to be optimistic about the potential arrival of prospects including Gavin McKenna and Ivar Stenberg in future seasons. As a result, league observers largely view Toronto as a team looking to refine and strengthen its lineup rather than begin a rebuilding process. Management is expected to focus on improving roster balance and playoff consistency around Matthews heading into next season.

Despite recurring postseason frustrations, Toronto remains one of the NHL’s strongest offensive teams on paper, and Matthews continues to be regarded as the centerpiece of the franchise. While speculative links to teams such as the Minnesota Wild and Utah Mammoth have surfaced in media discussions, analysts generally believe the Maple Leafs still offer Matthews one of the league’s most competitive long-term situations.

Matthews also remains among the most popular athletes in Toronto, with the organization publicly committed to building its future around him. For now, indications suggest the former Hart Trophy winner is focused on evaluating the club’s direction rather than pursuing an exit, as the Maple Leafs continue their search for a breakthrough Stanley Cup run.
