Jaspal Rana, Asian Games gold medallist and Indian national shooting coach, died on Thursday night at the age of 49, prompting widespread shock across the sporting community after officials confirmed his passing at a hospital in the national capital. According to PTI, National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo confirmed Rana died at a Delhi hospital on Thursday night. He had recently undergone a medical procedure after falling ill during the Indian contingent’s return flight from the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany.

Rana was serving as the high-performance coach for India’s pistol shooting team and was regarded as one of the key figures in developing the country’s modern shooting programme. He began feeling unwell during the return journey and was immediately taken for medical attention after landing in Delhi, where he remained under treatment until his death. The National Rifle Association of India expressed grief over Rana’s passing, describing it as a major loss to Indian sport. Tributes also poured in from across the sporting fraternity, with colleagues remembering his discipline, technical expertise, and long-standing contribution to Indian shooting at the international level.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condoled the death of Rana, saying he was “extremely grief-stricken” and praising his role in popularising shooting in India and his achievements at the Asian Games and world championships. Rana’s sudden demise has left the Indian shooting community in deep shock, with athletes, coaches, and administrators recalling his contribution to the sport both as an elite shooter and a mentor. Officials and colleagues across federations continue to express condolences, describing him as a disciplined coach whose influence extended beyond competitive shooting alone in India today.

Authorities also highlighted that Rana’s passing comes at a time when Indian shooting is preparing for upcoming international competitions, where he was expected to play an active mentoring role despite his recent health challenges. Colleagues said he remained closely involved with coaching discussions and athlete preparation strategies until shortly before his hospitalisation, reflecting his continued engagement with the sport. His career was often cited as an example of the transition from elite athlete to influential coach within India’s sporting system. Across the shooting community, his mentorship is credited with strengthening India’s competitive edge and inspiring a new generation of pistol shooters in recent years.
