Ashwin Picks Five Playoff Contenders; Sets Tough Condition for CSK to Qualify

Ravichandran Ashwin has predicted that five teams are currently leading the race for the IPL 2026 playoffs, while also outlining the difficult path ahead for Chennai Super Kings to qualify for the knockout stage. With only a few league matches remaining for most teams, the playoff battle has entered a crucial phase.

At present, Sunrisers Hyderabad lead the points table with 14 points, followed by Punjab Kings with 13 points. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans are all placed on 12 points, making the race for qualification extremely tight.

Speaking about the playoff picture, Ashwin said SRH and RCB are almost certain to secure qualification. According to him, Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings are the other strong contenders for the remaining spots. He suggested that these five sides currently look best placed to reach the playoffs unless there are major changes in the final round of league matches.

Ashwin also discussed Chennai Super Kings’ chances and said the five-time champions cannot afford any slip-ups from this point. He stated that CSK must win all four of their remaining league matches to stay alive in the competition. Even then, qualification could depend on results involving Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, along with Chennai maintaining a strong net run rate.

The former India spinner further added that net run rate may ultimately decide the final playoff positions. Ashwin also drew comparisons with CSK’s remarkable IPL 2010 comeback campaign, saying that if Chennai manage to win their upcoming matches against Lucknow Super Giants, they could build momentum and potentially make another memorable run in the tournament.
