Ashwin Left Speechless As 14-Year-Old Vaibhav Suryavanshi Dominates South Africa U19

Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashes 127 as India U19 crushes South Africa, earning glowing praise from Ashwin.

India's 14-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi delivered a stunning performance in the third and final Youth ODI against South Africa U19 in Benoni on Wednesday, smashing an unbeaten 127 runs off just 74 balls as captain. Opening the innings alongside Aaron George, who also scored a century, Suryavanshi powered India to a mammoth 393/7 in 50 overs. The team then restricted South Africa to 160 all out, securing a comprehensive 233-run victory and a clean sweep of the three-match series. This innings marked Suryavanshi as the youngest captain ever to score a Youth ODI century, stepping in for the injured regular skipper Ayush Mhatre.

Suryavanshi's recent form has been nothing short of phenomenal, with a string of explosive scores in domestic and U19 cricket over the past 30 days: 171 off 95 balls, 50 off 26, 190 off 84, 68 off 24, 108* off 61, 46 off 25, and now 127 off 74. The Rajasthan Royals star, already earmarked for IPL 2026 as an opener succeeding Sanju Samson, has left cricket enthusiasts in awe. Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, utterly impressed, took to X (formerly Twitter) to hail the teenager, writing in a Tamil-English mix: "Enna thambi, indha adi podhuma, illa innum konjam venuma?"—translating to "What's all this, brother? Is this sample enough, or are you going to raise the bar further?"

Ashwin went on to describe Suryavanshi's exploits as inexplicable in words, emphasizing the 14-year-old's temperament ahead of major milestones. "You can't explain in words what this kid is doing at 14. With the U19 WC round the corner, where he's expected to be the showstopper, followed immediately by the leap to the IPL for his first full season as an opener... the next four months of #VaibhavWatch are going to be exciting, telling us everything about his temperament, hunger & character," Ashwin posted. Suryavanshi clean bowled veteran Ashwin metaphorically with his stats, sparking widespread buzz in Indian cricket circles.

The upcoming U19 ODI World Cup, starting January 15, 2026, will see India open against the USA, providing Suryavanshi a global platform to showcase his opening prowess. His rapid rise underscores India's depth in youth talent, with the Bihar-born batsman already turning heads in senior domestic circuits. As IPL 2026 looms in March, franchises and fans alike are tracking his progress closely.

This series triumph adds to India's dominant record in age-group cricket against South Africa, building momentum for the World Cup defense. Suryavanshi's leadership and batting firepower position him as a potential showstopper, with Ashwin's endorsement amplifying expectations for the prodigy to sustain his hunger and adapt to bigger stages.
