Ashwin Comments On Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy Decision In RCB Clash

Ashwin criticises Hardik Pandya’s captaincy error against RCB match

Former India off‑spinner R Ashwin has shown no sympathy for Hardik Pandya after the Mumbai Indians skipper’s captaincy decisions came under fire following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s comprehensive win in the IPL 2026 encounter at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Ashwin, in a typically forthright commentary segment on his YouTube channel, dissected the key bowling changes and field settings that he believes cost MI the match, especially in their business‑end overs.

Ashwin zeroed in on Hardik’s decision to bring on wrist spinner Mayank Markande during a crucial phase when Rajat Patidar was well set at the crease. He produced a clip from the 2024 SRH–RCB match where Patidar had blasted four sixes in a row off Markande, underscoring that Patidar has a proven track record as a powerful hitter against that style of spin. “This SRH vs RCB 2024 game was where Rajat Patidar announced that he is a spin hitter,” Ashwin said, highlighting that history was effectively ignored by the Mumbai captain.

In the 2026 clash, Patidar repeated the script, clubbing three consecutive sixes off Markande in the 11th over before the bowler was quickly taken off. Markande finished with two overs in which he conceded 40 runs, an economy of 20.00, which Ashwin described as “not the smartest of moves” and “very average” from a captain expected to read the game astutely. He stressed that Hardik played into Patidar’s strengths at a time when containment mattered more than attacking options.

The former India star also contextualised the broader picture of Mumbai Indians’ struggles, suggesting this was not an isolated lapse but part of a recurring pattern in their campaign. He noted that MI have a strong squad on paper but have repeatedly failed to put it together on the field, especially under pressure. This, in his view, only magnified the impact of Hardik’s questionable captaincy choices against a defending‑champion side like RCB.

Ashwin’s tone left little room for defence, and his critique has sparked debate among fans and analysts about the expectations from an India‑calibre skipper in a high‑stakes domestic league. While some commentators have pointed to the pressure of limited‑overs captaincy and the challenges of managing a young bowling attack, Ashwin’s argument remains that basic lessons from past encounters should have been applied. For Hardik, the episode now adds to the scrutiny over his leadership credentials just as the IPL 2026 season approaches its decisive phase.
