Arjun Erigaisi Leads Indian Campaign at Chess World Cup

Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi secures a commanding win as Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa settle for draws.

Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi showcased exceptional form yet again, defeating Shamsiddin Vokhidov of Uzbekistan in a dominant attacking display during the first game of the third round at the Chess World Cup in Panjim, Goa, on Friday. The 21-year-old Indian sensation, playing with white pieces, demonstrated fine tactical precision in a Queen-pawn opening and found creative attacking motifs that left his opponent with no counterplay. This victory marked Erigaisi’s third consecutive win in the knockout event, highlighting his remarkable consistency and confidence.

Meanwhile, world champion D Gukesh was held to a draw by Germany’s Frederik Svane after a balanced strategic encounter. Gukesh, who continues to attract massive attention following his historic World Championship triumph, maintained steady control throughout the middle game but could not find a decisive breakthrough. In a field filled with the world’s best, the draw nonetheless keeps Gukesh well-positioned as the tournament enters its crucial stages.

Adding to India’s strong performance, Grandmaster P Harikrishna also registered an impressive victory over Belgian prodigy Daniel Dardha. Playing with white, Harikrishna crafted a brilliant attacking game, converting a small advantage into a decisive win with calm precision. The seasoned campaigner, known for his composure and deep calculations, now needs only a draw in the next game to secure a berth in the fourth round.
