AIFF President Makes Emotional Appeal As Jamshedpur FC Faces Uncertain ISL Future

All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey has made an appeal to the Tata Group to reconsider its decision to withdraw Jamshedpur FC from the Indian Super League (ISL), describing the move as a major setback for Indian football. Chaubey urged the corporate giant to continue its association with senior-level football, saying the presence of organisations like Tata is crucial for the growth and development of the sport in the country. The Tata Group recently announced its decision to withdraw Jamshedpur FC from the ISL, stating that the move was part of a long-term strategic plan to return focus to grassroots football development.

Tata Steel Vice President (Corporate Services) D B Sundara Ramam clarified that the decision was not linked to uncertainty surrounding the commercial future of the ISL and said the withdrawal would not be reconsidered. Despite the company's stance, Chaubey said the AIFF would continue to hope for a possible rethink. Speaking in an interview with PTI, he said the federation would welcome Tata Group's continued involvement in top-tier football and was willing to consider suggestions from the company to find a solution that benefits players and the sport.

"AIFF would be happy if Tata remains in football, especially in senior top-tier football," Chaubey said. He added that if any request or appeal from the federation could influence the decision, AIFF would make every effort to ensure that Tata continues its participation in the senior football league. The AIFF president also expressed confidence in the Tata Group's commitment to Indian football, saying the company's decisions are not driven solely by short-term commercial considerations. He suggested that the decision to withdraw Jamshedpur FC was likely taken after careful internal discussions and that there could be broader reasons behind the move.

"It cannot be for a Rs 1.1 crore participation fee or management fee. It is not that," Chaubey said, referring to the financial aspects associated with league participation. He added that Tata has a wide range of businesses and that the decision to step away from the ISL was likely based on factors beyond immediate financial concerns. The withdrawal of Jamshedpur FC has created uncertainty for players, supporters, and other stakeholders associated with the club. Tata Steel has assured that the club will honour existing player contracts and assist footballers in finding new opportunities with other teams.

Chaubey said he trusted the company's commitment to handling the transition responsibly. Jamshedpur FC, established in 2017, became one of the prominent teams in the ISL and developed a strong fan base in Jharkhand. The club's participation also represented the Tata Group's long-standing involvement in Indian football, particularly through its grassroots initiatives and development programmes. The AIFF chief's appeal comes at a time when Indian football is facing several challenges, including uncertainty over the ISL's future structure and commercial framework.

The league has played a major role in raising the profile of domestic football, attracting investment, and providing a platform for Indian players. While the Tata Group has maintained that its decision is final, Chaubey's appeal highlights the importance of corporate support in sustaining professional football in India. The AIFF is hopeful that discussions may lead to a solution that allows Tata to continue contributing to the country's football ecosystem, particularly at the highest competitive level.
