The delay was triggered by strict weather safety protocols in the United States, which require sporting events to be halted when lightning strikes or severe thunderstorms pose a risk to players, officials and spectators. Organisers suspended the match at halftime after meteorological warnings indicated that dangerous weather was approaching the stadium area. Heavy rain, strong winds and the threat of lightning forced thousands of fans to leave their seats and seek shelter while players remained off the pitch.
France had taken a 1-0 lead before the halftime whistle was blown at 5:49 p.m. local time. Under normal circumstances, play would have resumed after a 15-minute break. However, worsening weather conditions meant that the scheduled restart could not take place. Officials initially hoped to resume the contest at 7:00 p.m., but continuing thunderstorms and lightning activity prevented clearance from being granted.
