131-Minute Delay Rocks France-Iraq Match As US Protocol Disrupts World Cup Schedule
US protocol requirements delayed France-Iraq match by 131 minutes.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 witnessed its first major weather-related disruption as the Group I match between France and Iraq at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia was suspended for 131 minutes due to severe thunderstorms and lightning. The lengthy interruption transformed what should have been a routine football fixture into the longest World Cup match in the tournament's history, with the game lasting nearly four hours from kickoff to the final whistle.
The delay was triggered by strict weather safety protocols in the United States, which require sporting events to be halted when lightning strikes or severe thunderstorms pose a risk to players, officials and spectators. Organisers suspended the match at halftime after meteorological warnings indicated that dangerous weather was approaching the stadium area. Heavy rain, strong winds and the threat of lightning forced thousands of fans to leave their seats and seek shelter while players remained off the pitch.
France had taken a 1-0 lead before the halftime whistle was blown at 5:49 p.m. local time. Under normal circumstances, play would have resumed after a 15-minute break. However, worsening weather conditions meant that the scheduled restart could not take place. Officials initially hoped to resume the contest at 7:00 p.m., but continuing thunderstorms and lightning activity prevented clearance from being granted. The match eventually restarted at 8:00 p.m., resulting in a total delay of 131 minutes.

The interruption highlighted concerns that had been raised before the tournament regarding weather conditions in several host cities across the United States. Similar delays occurred during last year's Club World Cup, prompting discussions about scheduling, stadium infrastructure and contingency planning. While many World Cup venues have benefited from improved preparations and the use of covered facilities, the Philadelphia match demonstrated that severe weather remains a significant challenge for outdoor sporting events.
Once play resumed, France quickly reasserted control of the contest. The French side extended its advantage through two goals from Kylian Mbappé, while Ousmane Dembélé also found the net. The eventual 3-0 victory ensured that the lengthy delay did not derail France's campaign, although the unusual circumstances became the dominant talking point after the match.
Tournament organisers have repeatedly stressed that player and spectator safety remains the highest priority, particularly when severe weather threatens host venues. With several matches still to be played across different regions of the United States, officials are expected to continue closely monitoring weather conditions and enforcing established protocols whenever necessary to minimise risks during the remainder of the competition.
