Virat Kohli In Feud With Gautam Gambhir And Ajit Agarkar Over Test Record
Virat Kohli reportedly clashed with Gambhir and Agarkar over Test record comments
Former India cricketer Virat Kohli is at the centre of a renewed debate over his relationship with India’s team management, after comments from commentator Sanjay Manjrekar suggested underlying tensions involving head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The discussion was triggered after Kohli, speaking in a recent podcast appearance, referred to needing to “prove a point” in the face of certain criticisms regarding his future in international cricket, including speculation around his potential participation in the 2027 World Cup.
His remarks were widely interpreted as a reference to sections of the current team management and selection structure.Sanjay Manjrekar, speaking on a podcast, stated that the “environment” Kohli referred to could be understood as his working relationship with the present coach-selector setup. He suggested that the transition from earlier coaching regimes to the current leadership group may have altered the support structure Kohli previously experienced during his peak years as captain and senior batter.
Manjrekar contrasted the current phase with Kohli’s earlier stint under former head coach Ravi Shastri, noting that the former management style was highly supportive and consistent in backing senior players. He implied that the shift in leadership dynamics following changes in coaching and selection personnel had contributed to a less comfortable environment for the batter.

He also pointed to Kohli’s statistical trajectory in Test cricket over the last five years, noting a decline in average and consistency compared to his peak years. According to Manjrekar, this period saw fewer centuries and recurring technical challenges, particularly against deliveries outside the off stump, which impacted his overall output in the longest format.
The remarks have further fuelled ongoing debate around Kohli’s place in India’s long-term Test and ODI plans, especially as the team transitions under new leadership structures. While no official response has been issued by the individuals involved, the discussion underscores continuing scrutiny of senior players’ roles in shaping India’s future cricketing direction.
