The elegant right-handed batter represented India in 85 Test matches, scoring 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, including 12 centuries and 26 half-centuries. In One-Day Internationals, he amassed 2,962 runs in 90 matches, while he scored 375 runs in 20 T20 Internationals.

One of the defining chapters of Rahane's career came as India's Test captain during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. After India suffered a heavy defeat in the opening Test, Rahane led the side to a remarkable comeback, guiding the team to victories in Melbourne and the historic triumph at the Gabba, where Australia had remained unbeaten for over three decades. He also captained India to an important Test victory against Australia in Dharamshala in 2017.

Rahane retires with an unbeaten record as India's Test captain, registering four wins and two draws in six matches while recording the highest win percentage among Indian Test captains who have led the side in at least five Tests.
