IPL 2026: Hardik Pandya Confirms Jasprit Bumrah Rested For RR Match
Bumrah rested as MI make key changes for Rajasthan Royals clash.
Mumbai Indians (MI) made a notable team change in their crucial IPL 2026 clash against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, with star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah left out of the playing XI. MI captain Hardik Pandya confirmed at the toss that Bumrah was being rested for the match, describing it as a planned decision as the franchise looked to manage workloads in a demanding season.
Pandya stated that Bumrah’s absence was due to rest, with Shardul Thakur included in the XI as his replacement. The MI skipper also confirmed that Deepak Chahar remained part of the starting lineup, although there was initial confusion over the exact change during the toss announcement. Despite the personnel adjustments, Mumbai Indians opted to bowl first, citing favourable evening conditions and a pitch expected to improve under lights.
The match carried significant importance for Rajasthan Royals, who entered the contest needing a win to secure their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs. RR captain Riyan Parag returned to the side after missing the previous match and confirmed multiple changes, including the inclusion of Ravindra Jadeja and Nandre Burger. He also noted that the match was effectively a do-or-die encounter, with no reliance on other results if they managed to win.

Rajasthan Royals opened with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal, while MI focused on maintaining pressure through their revised bowling attack. Parag emphasised that his team was treating the match as a final, highlighting both the stakes and the pressure of the situation. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians, already out of playoff contention, aimed to finish their season on a strong note despite missing key players.
At the toss, Hardik Pandya also reflected on the broader occasion, noting the significance of the match-day atmosphere and the franchise’s association with community initiatives. He acknowledged that the season had been challenging for MI but stressed the importance of ending on a positive note. With Bumrah rested and RR fighting for survival, the contest carried contrasting motivations for both sides, adding intensity to an already high-pressure fixture.
