Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, Selected For Record Sixth FIFA World Cup With Portugal Squad

Ronaldo named for record sixth World Cup appearance.

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to make history after being named in the Portugal national football team’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first player expected to appear in six editions of the tournament. Portugal coach Roberto Martinez announced the squad on Tuesday, confirming that the 41-year-old veteran striker will once again lead his country on football’s biggest stage. Ronaldo, currently playing for Al-Nassr FC, continues to extend one of the most remarkable international careers in football history.

Ronaldo remains the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football with 143 goals for Portugal and has represented his country across multiple generations of tournaments. Despite his extraordinary individual achievements, Portugal has never won the FIFA World Cup title. The upcoming tournament could represent Ronaldo’s final opportunity to capture the only major trophy missing from his international career. The Portuguese captain is also expected to renew his long-standing rivalry with Lionel Messi, who is also preparing for what could be his sixth World Cup appearance after guiding Argentina to victory in Qatar in 2022.

Portugal’s 27-man squad features several high-profile players from Europe’s top clubs. The selection includes Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr teammate Joao Felix as well as Paris Saint-Germain stars Vitinha, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes, and Goncalo Ramos. Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United FC and Bernardo Silva of Manchester City FC were also included, highlighting the depth and experience available to Roberto Martinez ahead of the tournament.

The Portuguese side will play warm-up friendlies against Chile and Nigeria before beginning its World Cup campaign against DR Congo on June 17. Portugal will then face Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K matches scheduled for June 23 and June 27, respectively. The team enters the tournament with strong expectations after consistently performing well in recent international competitions under Martinez’s leadership.

Ronaldo’s inclusion in the squad has generated significant attention across the football world, particularly given his age and continued ability to compete at the highest level. The striker has repeatedly defied expectations regarding longevity in professional football and remains a central figure both on and off the pitch for Portugal. His leadership, experience, and goalscoring record are expected to play a crucial role as Portugal attempts to challenge for its first-ever World Cup triumph.

Portugal’s squad blends experienced veterans with emerging young talent, creating what many analysts believe could be one of the nation’s strongest tournament teams in recent years. With players competing in top leagues across Europe and Asia, the team enters the competition carrying high expectations from supporters. The 2026 FIFA World Cup could ultimately become another defining chapter in Cristiano Ronaldo’s historic career, further cementing his legacy as one of football’s greatest players.
