Will MS Dhoni Play for CSK Again? Coach Fleming Leaves Door Open on Future

CSK coach Stephen Fleming declines to confirm MS Dhoni's playing future, saying management will decide after the benching season.

Speculation over the playing future of MS Dhoni with Chennai Super Kings intensified on Tuesday after head coach Stephen Fleming addressed questions regarding the veteran wicketkeeper-batter’s availability for the next Indian Premier League season. With CSK struggling in the IPL 2026 campaign and nearing elimination, uncertainty continues to surround whether Dhoni will return to the field in the franchise’s colors next year.

Dhoni, who was retained by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2026 season as an uncapped player, has not featured in a single match this year due to injury concerns. The former India captain was expected to play a mentoring role while helping groom the franchise’s next generation of players. However, with only one league match remaining in CSK’s campaign, the 44-year-old has neither taken the field as a batter nor resumed wicketkeeping duties during the tournament.

Speaking about Dhoni’s future, Fleming avoided giving a definitive answer and clarified that the decision ultimately rests with the franchise management. The longtime CSK coach acknowledged Dhoni’s influence within the dressing room despite his absence from on-field action. Fleming stated that Dhoni’s continued presence around the squad had been extremely valuable for younger players and had helped maintain continuity within the team environment during a challenging season.

Fleming also highlighted the positives CSK could take from an otherwise disappointing campaign, particularly the emergence of several young talents who could shape the team’s future. He noted that the franchise had introduced promising players who may become long-term contributors for the Chennai Super Kings. At the same time, the coach admitted that results remain the primary benchmark for judging the team’s performance and accepted that criticism surrounding the season was understandable.

Debate over Dhoni’s future has dominated discussions throughout the tournament, with fans and experts repeatedly questioning whether the legendary cricketer has already played his final IPL match. While the franchise maintained that injuries prevented him from participating this season, various theories circulated suggesting the veteran deliberately stayed away from playing duties to allow younger cricketers greater opportunities in the squad. Reports of Dhoni preparing for the upcoming clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad further fuelled speculation about a possible late-season appearance.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar also weighed in on the situation, suggesting that Chennai Super Kings may benefit more by continuing to back younger players instead of rushing Dhoni back into action. Despite widespread curiosity among fans, there remains no official confirmation regarding Dhoni’s playing future beyond IPL 2026. For now, the iconic cricketer’s next move continues to remain one of the biggest unanswered questions in Indian cricket.
