Why Is BCCI Releasing IPL 2026 Fixtures In Two Phases This Season?
BCCI will release IPL 2026 fixtures in two phases due to upcoming assembly elections.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 schedule will be unveiled in two phases, with the first set of fixtures expected to be released by March 6 or 7, according to a report by Cricbuzz. The decision to split the schedule comes amid upcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Assam, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India to await confirmation of the poll timetable from the Election Commission of India before releasing the full calendar.
The IPL Governing Council approved the first half of the season 19 schedule during an online meeting on Monday. A similar phased approach had been followed in 2024 during the Lok Sabha elections, reflecting the BCCI’s efforts to avoid clashes between cricket fixtures and election activities. The initial release is expected to cover approximately the first 13 to 14 days of matches.
The IPL 2026 season is set to begin with a curtain-raiser at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which will host five home fixtures for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The defending champions are likely to play the opening match, in keeping with tradition. The venue will also host one of the playoff matches and the tournament final, confirmed Santosh Menon of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

Although the exact date for RCB’s opening fixture remains undecided, reports suggest the season may start slightly later than originally planned, with March 28 or 29 being the most probable options. The tournament is expected to conclude on May 31. Details regarding the pre-tournament captains’ gathering are expected to be announced next week, alongside guidance on practice sessions for franchises.
BCCI acting CEO and IPL COO Hemang Amin recently communicated to franchises that practice session guidelines will be shared soon. He also outlined that No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for international players, including Australian Occupation Standards Classification (OSCA) documents and individual South African NOCs, should be submitted in a single batch to streamline processing.
The phased announcement strategy ensures that the IPL season can proceed smoothly without logistical conflicts with the state assembly elections, allowing organisers to finalise matches while adhering to electoral guidelines and minimizing scheduling uncertainties.
