Virat Kohli And RCB Get Strong Backing Over Controversial Jason Holder Catch Decision
Former India cricketer backs Virat Kohli and RCB, terming Jason Holder catch decision unlucky.
A controversial on-field decision during an Indian Premier League 2026 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans has sparked debate, with former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif backing RCB’s over a disputed catch involving Jason Holder.
The incident occurred during a crucial phase of the match when RCB batter Rajat Patidar was adjudged out following a low catch at deep square leg by Holder. The decision did not sit well with the RCB camp, as players and team officials believed the ball had made contact with the ground before the catch was completed. Virat Kohli was visibly animated, engaging in a heated discussion with the fourth umpire immediately after the dismissal.
Weighing in on the controversy, Kaif expressed doubts over the legitimacy of the catch, suggesting that external factors may have impacted Holder’s ability to execute it cleanly. He noted that the presence of fellow fielder Kagiso Rabada, who was converging towards the same area, could have distracted Holder at a critical moment. According to Kaif, such situations can break a fielder’s concentration, increasing the likelihood of errors.
Kaif further elaborated that Holder appeared to take additional time to gain control of the ball after the initial attempt, reinforcing his belief that the ball may have touched the ground. He stated that, in his view, the batter was “unlucky” to be given out under such circumstances, implying that the decision could have gone in the batter’s favour upon closer scrutiny.
Despite the controversy, Gujarat Titans delivered a strong performance with the ball, restricting RCB to 155 in 19.2 overs. Arshad Khan led the bowling effort with three wickets, while Holder and Rashid Khan picked up two apiece. Contributions from Devdutt Padikkal (40) and Kohli (28) helped RCB post a competitive total.
In response, Gujarat Titans chased down the target comfortably, securing a four-wicket victory in 15.5 overs. Captain Shubman Gill set the tone with a rapid 43 off 18 balls, while Jos Buttler added a brisk 39 off 19 deliveries to maintain momentum. The win highlighted GT’s dominance on the day, even as debate over the contentious dismissal continued to draw attention.
