Stephen Fleming Parts Ways With CSK; Hemang Badani Among Head Coach Candidates
Fleming's departure signals a major coaching transition at CSK.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have announced the end of their long-standing association with head coach Stephen Fleming, bringing to a close one of the most successful partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise said the decision was reached after a series of “open and honest discussions” between Fleming and the team management. The move comes after CSK failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons, prompting a review of the team's performance and future direction.
Fleming's association with CSK began in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 when he joined as a player before taking over as head coach in 2009. Under his leadership, the franchise won five IPL titles and two Champions League Twenty20 trophies, establishing itself as one of the most successful teams in the tournament. During his tenure, CSK reached the IPL playoffs a record 12 times and appeared in 10 finals, while also building an iconic partnership with former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
As CSK prepares for a new chapter, former India cricketer and current Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani has emerged as a leading contender to replace Fleming. Badani, who represented India in 40 One-Day Internationals and four Test matches, is reportedly being considered for the vacant position. According to reports, senior CSK officials are currently reviewing the franchise's recent performances and planning their long-term strategy ahead of the next IPL season.

Reports also suggest that the franchise could reassess its entire coaching setup as part of the restructuring process. Rupa Gurunath, Director of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL) and daughter of former BCCI president N. Srinivasan, is reportedly overseeing several key decisions during the transition. The management is expected to finalise its coaching plans after completing its review of the team's recent campaigns.
In a statement released by the franchise, Fleming expressed gratitude for his 18-year association with CSK. He described his time with the franchise as the greatest privilege of his coaching career, thanking players, support staff, management and fans for their unwavering support. Fleming said he was proud of everything the team had achieved together and added that Chennai Super Kings would always remain close to his heart.
Despite its remarkable success under Fleming, CSK has faced growing criticism in recent seasons following a noticeable decline in performances. The team's continued reliance on experienced players, coupled with uncertainty surrounding Dhoni's fitness and future, became recurring topics throughout recent campaigns. With Fleming's departure, the franchise now begins a significant rebuilding phase as it looks to restore its position among the IPL's leading contenders.
