Sooryavanshi's Radical Hang-Back Technique Redefines T20 Batting Strategy

Rajasthan Royals batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s explosive batting style has become one of the biggest talking points of the IPL 2026 season, with renowned batting coach Zubin Bharucha attributing the teenager’s remarkable six-hitting ability to an unconventional technical approach. According to Bharucha, the young batter possesses “zero front-foot game,” a trait traditionally viewed as a weakness but one that has unexpectedly become the foundation of his success in T20 cricket.

Speaking about Sooryavanshi’s technique, Bharucha explained that the batter’s preference for staying deep in the crease and “hanging back” allows him to manipulate length differently from most conventional batters. Instead of stepping forward to drive deliveries along the ground, Sooryavanshi creates power by delaying movement and striking the ball from a stable base. Entering the match needing seven sixes to surpass Chris Gayle’s long-standing record of 59 sixes in a single IPL season set in 2012, the teenage batter achieved the milestone in just 15 deliveries. Bowlers including Pat Cummins, Eshan Malinga, and Sakib Hussain struggled to contain him as he dismantled the attack in a breathtaking display of power-hitting.
