Sooryavanshi's Radical Hang-Back Technique Redefines T20 Batting Strategy
Teen batter Sooryavanshi breaks Gayle's IPL six record through an unconventional hang-back batting technique.
Rajasthan Royals batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s explosive batting style has become one of the biggest talking points of the IPL 2026 season, with renowned batting coach Zubin Bharucha attributing the teenager’s remarkable six-hitting ability to an unconventional technical approach. According to Bharucha, the young batter possesses “zero front-foot game,” a trait traditionally viewed as a weakness but one that has unexpectedly become the foundation of his success in T20 cricket.
Speaking about Sooryavanshi’s technique, Bharucha explained that the batter’s preference for staying deep in the crease and “hanging back” allows him to manipulate length differently from most conventional batters. Instead of stepping forward to drive deliveries along the ground, Sooryavanshi creates power by delaying movement and striking the ball from a stable base. The approach has made it difficult for bowlers to settle on an effective length against him, particularly in the shortest format of the game where margins are already narrow.
The impact of that style was on full display during Rajasthan Royals’ IPL Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chandigarh on Wednesday. Entering the match needing seven sixes to surpass Chris Gayle’s long-standing record of 59 sixes in a single IPL season set in 2012, the teenage batter achieved the milestone in just 15 deliveries. Bowlers including Pat Cummins, Eshan Malinga, and Sakib Hussain struggled to contain him as he dismantled the attack in a breathtaking display of power-hitting.

Sooryavanshi’s achievement drew widespread attention not only because of the speed at which the record was broken but also because of his age. At just 15 years old, the Rajasthan Royals batter erased a 14-year-old IPL record within the opening stages of a high-pressure knockout match. Cricket analysts and former players have since highlighted the fearless nature of his batting and his ability to consistently clear boundaries regardless of match situations or bowling quality.
Bharucha noted that Sooryavanshi’s success reflects the changing dynamics of modern T20 batting, where unconventional methods are increasingly proving effective against traditional bowling strategies. The “hang back” method allows the batter to access both short and fuller deliveries with similar attacking intent, effectively redefining what bowlers consider a safe length. Analysts believe this adaptability has become one of the major reasons why opposition teams have struggled to formulate plans against the young batter throughout the season.
The record-breaking innings has further strengthened Sooryavanshi’s growing reputation as one of Indian cricket’s most exciting emerging talents. His aggressive batting approach, combined with his ability to consistently dominate experienced international bowlers, has already made him a central figure in discussions about the future of T20 batting. As Rajasthan Royals continue their IPL campaign, attention is expected to remain firmly on the teenager whose unconventional technique is rapidly changing perceptions of power hitting in modern cricket.
