Ruturaj Gaikwad Reacts After CSK’s IPL 2026 Loss Against Lucknow Super Giants
Ruturaj Gaikwad backed CSK teammates after their disappointing IPL 2026 defeat.
Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted Chennai Super Kings’ bowling unit endured an “off-day” after the team suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Lucknow Super Giants in their IPL 2026 clash on Friday, a result that significantly dented Chennai Super Kings’ playoff hopes.Following the defeat, CSK remain on 12 points from 12 matches and now face a must-win situation in their remaining two league fixtures while also depending on favourable results elsewhere to stay in contention for the playoffs.
Lucknow, despite already being eliminated from the tournament, produced a dominant chase led by Mitchell Marsh, whose explosive innings put the visitors under heavy pressure.Speaking after the match, Gaikwad acknowledged shortcomings in execution with the ball and stressed the need for immediate improvement.“Bowling had an off-day today,” the CSK captain said, adding that the team would focus on addressing weaknesses before travelling back to Chennai for the final phase of the league campaign.
Despite the setback, he maintained that the qualification equation remained straightforward and insisted the team was not panicking over its playoff chances.Gaikwad said CSK believed their total of 187 for five was competitive on a pitch that offered some assistance to fast bowlers. However, he credited Lucknow’s aggressive batting approach, particularly from Marsh and Josh Inglis, for shifting the momentum decisively in the chase.

He admitted the bowlers struggled to execute plans consistently, especially while attempting hard-length deliveries against batters comfortable against short-pitched bowling.Lucknow captain Rishabh Pant praised his side’s attitude despite their elimination from playoff contention, saying the team continued to play with pride and intensity. Pant said Lucknow’s four-pronged pace attack had performed effectively throughout the season and suggested that overthinking at key moments may have prevented the team from achieving better results overall.
Pant also explained his decision not to bat in his usual No. 4 position, stating that the management wanted to provide opportunities to players who had not featured regularly during the tournament. The victory allowed Lucknow to end their campaign on a positive note, while Chennai now enter the final stretch of the league stage under mounting pressure to keep their playoff hopes alive.
