RR vs GT, IPL 2026: RR Coaching Staff Steps in After Jofra Archer's Disastrous First Over
Jofra Archer concedes 18 runs in the first over; GT openers Gill and Sudharsan dominate RR bowlers.
Gujarat Titans have taken complete control against Rajasthan Royals in their IPL 2026 clash at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, storming to 82/0 at the end of the powerplay. Openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan looked in sublime touch from the very first over, punishing every loose delivery and putting RR under immense pressure early in the innings.
The nightmare start for Rajasthan began with a disastrous opening over from Jofra Archer, who leaked 18 runs including wides, a no-ball and overthrows. Gujarat immediately capitalised on RR’s sloppy bowling and fielding, with Sudharsan and Gill finding boundaries at regular intervals to completely dominate the powerplay phase.
Rajasthan Royals were already dealing with a major setback before the match after regular captain Riyan Parag was ruled out because of injury. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal stepped in as stand-in captain and chose to bowl first after winning the toss, hoping the Jaipur pitch would offer early assistance to the pacers.
However, Gujarat’s opening pair never allowed RR to settle. Gill looked elegant and composed while Sudharsan played aggressively against both pace and spin. Rajasthan bowlers struggled badly with their lengths, and the pressure became visible as misfields and bowling errors continued during the early overs.
RR head coach Kumar Sangakkara was seen stepping in near the boundary ropes after Archer’s expensive spell, trying to calm the players and reorganise the field placements. The quick intervention reflected Rajasthan’s concern as Gujarat threatened to completely run away with the match inside the powerplay itself.
The match carries massive importance in the IPL 2026 playoff race because both teams entered the contest with identical records of six wins and four defeats. A victory could significantly strengthen the winner’s position in the top four and potentially even push them closer to the top of the points table.
Despite Gujarat’s dominance with the bat, Rajasthan fans are still waiting to see teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi later in the game. The 15-year-old has become one of IPL 2026’s biggest attractions and remains on the verge of several batting milestones after an impressive season with RR.
