Rishabh Pant's Surprise Delhi Capitals Return Explained Despite 12 Cr Salary Sacrifice

Star wicketkeeper prioritises reunion with former franchise over salary.

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is reportedly set to take a pay cut of approximately Rs 12 crore to facilitate a high-profile return from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to Delhi Capitals (DC) in what could become one of the most significant player trades in Indian Premier League history. The proposed deal, which remains subject to approval by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is expected to involve left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav moving from Delhi Capitals to Lucknow Super Giants.

If the trade is completed, Pant's IPL salary would reportedly decrease from Rs 27 crore to around Rs 15 crore. The substantial reduction underscores the 28-year-old's apparent willingness to prioritise a return to his former franchise over financial considerations. Pant spent the majority of his IPL career with Delhi Capitals and developed into one of the team's most influential players before joining Lucknow ahead of the IPL 2025 season.

Pant's departure from Delhi Capitals was believed to have been influenced by differences with the franchise's management. However, developments within the ownership structure, including JSW assuming full operational control of the team for the next two years, are understood to have improved the prospects of a reunion. The move would bring Pant back to the franchise where he established himself as one of the league's premier wicketkeeper-batters and captains.

The trade would also signal a change in strategy for Lucknow Super Giants. After acquiring Pant for a record Rs 27 crore before IPL 2025, the franchise viewed him as the long-term leader of the team. However, results failed to match expectations. LSG finished seventh in the 2025 season and last in the standings in 2026, while Pant managed just 10 victories in 28 matches as captain. His batting returns across the two seasons—581 runs at an average of 26.4 and a strike rate of 135.74—were below the standards he had previously set in T20 cricket.

For Delhi Capitals, the deal would bring back a player who scored 3,284 runs in 111 IPL matches for the franchise at an average of 35.31 and a strike rate of 148.93. Pant also enjoyed success as captain, leading the team in 44 matches and registering 24 wins. His return would provide Delhi with an experienced leader and a proven match-winner ahead of future campaigns.

Kuldeep Yadav, meanwhile, would be returning closer to his roots by joining the franchise representing his home state of Uttar Pradesh. Since moving to Delhi Capitals in 2022, the wrist-spinner revitalised his IPL career, taking 72 wickets in 65 matches. With 112 wickets overall in the tournament, Kuldeep would strengthen Lucknow's bowling attack and give the franchise one of the IPL's most accomplished spin options.
