Reports Suggest MS Dhoni Could Become CSK Head Coach After IPL 2026 Season

MS Dhoni tipped as CSK head coach amid leadership discussions.

Former India spinner R Ashwin has sparked widespread discussion after hinting at the possibility of MS Dhoni taking up a coaching role at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the future, following a disappointing IPL 2026 season for the franchise. CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs after finishing with six wins and eight losses in 14 matches.

The speculation around leadership changes comes amid growing scrutiny of CSK’s coaching setup, particularly head coach Stephen Fleming, whose position has come under the spotlight after the team’s poor run of form. CSK lost their final three league matches, and questions have been raised about the team’s declining consistency under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy.

MS Dhoni, one of the most influential figures in CSK’s history, did not feature in any match during IPL 2026. He was initially ruled out due to a calf strain and later suffered a thumb injury ahead of the team’s final league fixture, further limiting his involvement in the season. Despite his absence from the field, Dhoni continues to remain central to discussions around CSK’s future direction.

In a broader conversation about team management and leadership, Ashwin’s remarks on social media added fuel to speculation about potential structural changes within CSK. His comments were made in response to a fan discussion on X, where users debated whether CSK should consider alternatives in coaching and strategic roles going forward.

Responding to a fan’s humorous suggestion that he should not be appointed as head coach due to his outspoken nature, Ashwin replied in a light-hearted tone, saying he would not only announce the playing XI but also disclose tactical plans to opponents. He added that such behaviour would likely invite scrutiny from anti-corruption authorities and could even lead to professional setbacks, underscoring the risks of over-disclosure in competitive sport.

While Dhoni has not made any official statement regarding coaching ambitions, the idea of him transitioning into a mentorship or coaching role continues to circulate among fans and analysts, especially given his long-standing association with CSK and his leadership legacy in the IPL.
