RCB Protest Jason Holder Catch Decision After Rajat Patidar’s Controversial Dismissal

RCB questioned Jason Holder’s controversial catch after Rajat Patidar’s dismissal, sparking debate over umpiring decision.

A controversial dismissal during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans has sparked widespread debate over the legality of a catch taken by Jason Holder at deep backward square leg, with RCB captain Rajat Patidar’s wicket triggering heated reactions from players, commentators, and fans.

The incident occurred when Holder appeared to complete a diving catch near the boundary line to dismiss Patidar. However, RCB players, including star batter Virat Kohli and head coach Andy Flower, immediately raised concerns, arguing that the ball may have touched the ground as Holder slid and attempted to maintain control. Kohli was visibly upset on the field and was seen engaging in a heated discussion with the on-field match officials over the decision.

The third umpire reviewed multiple replays before ruling Patidar out, confirming the catch as legal. The decision intensified the reaction from the RCB camp, with Kohli continuing to express frustration, while Flower also joined the discussion to seek clarification on the interpretation of the catch. The dismissal came at a crucial moment in the match, and many observers felt it shifted momentum in Gujarat Titans’ favour.

The controversy quickly spilled over onto social media and expert commentary, with former India cricketer Aakash Chopra questioning whether the catch met the requirements of the MCC Laws of Cricket. He referenced Clause 33.3 of Law 33, which states that a catch is complete only when a fielder has full control over both the ball and body movement. Chopra argued that while initial control may have been established, the sliding motion and possible contact with the ground raised doubts about whether complete control was maintained.

Adding to the debate, critics pointed out that television replays appeared to show the ball potentially touching the ground during Holder’s slide. Some commentators argued that with modern broadcast technology and multiple camera angles available, such marginal decisions should be clearer. Others, however, supported the third umpire’s ruling, stating that control and grounding must be clearly disproven for an “out” decision to be overturned.

The incident has reignited discussions around consistency in umpiring decisions and the interpretation of “clean catches” in modern cricket. While Gujarat Titans benefited from the ruling on the field, the decision left RCB visibly frustrated and has become one of the most debated moments of the match, highlighting once again how fine margins and technology-driven reviews continue to shape outcomes in high-stakes T20 cricket.
