Rahane Backs Himself to Lead KKR Comeback After Joint-Lowest IPL Finish in 16 Years
Ajinkya Rahane addresses KKR's IPL 2026 rebuild after the team's eighth-place finish last season.
Ajinkya Rahane has addressed the pressure of leading the Kolkata Knight Riders into the Indian Premier League 2026 season following the team’s disappointing performance last year. The franchise finished eighth in the 2025 campaign, marking its joint-lowest position in 16 years and missing out on the playoffs.
Despite the setback, Rahane, who has been retained as captain for a second consecutive season, emphasized a positive mindset when dealing with challenges. Speaking in a recent interaction, he highlighted the importance of viewing pressure as an opportunity rather than a burden, adding that his approach as both a player and leader has always been to remain composed and optimistic.
Reflecting on his leadership, Rahane expressed gratitude towards the franchise for continuing to trust him with captaincy responsibilities. He noted that each season presents unique challenges, but maintaining a strong mental outlook is key to navigating difficult phases. His comments come at a time when the team is looking to rebuild and regain competitiveness.

Individually, Rahane had a productive season in 2025, emerging as one of the leading performers for the side with 390 runs. However, the team managed to win only five out of 14 matches, with two games abandoned due to rain, ultimately resulting in a disappointing campaign for the three-time champions.
Heading into the new season, KKR face concerns regarding their bowling unit. Key pacer Harshit Rana has been ruled out due to a knee injury, while uncertainty has surrounded the availability of Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, who was recovering from injury. The team had also released Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman earlier due to external factors, further affecting their pace resources.
There are also strategic decisions to be made regarding Rahane’s batting position. While he primarily batted at number three last season, the team management could consider promoting him to open alongside players like Finn Allen or Tim Seifert. As the new season approaches, KKR will aim to overcome past setbacks and mount a stronger challenge under Rahane’s leadership.
