Purple Cap Leader Bhuvneshwar Kumar Says Individual Awards No Longer Matter
Bhuvneshwar Kumar leads wicket chart but says team success matters more than individual IPL awards.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar continued his strong IPL 2026 run but chose to downplay the attention around the Purple Cap, saying he is focused more on team results than individual recognition. Currently the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 17 wickets, he has been one of RCB’s most consistent performers this season. His latest spell of 3 for 28 against Gujarat Titans once again highlighted his experience and control with the ball. Despite his form, RCB ended up on the losing side in the four-wicket defeat.
After the match, Bhuvneshwar stressed that his mindset has evolved with experience and seniority. He said that earlier in his career, personal milestones and awards carried more weight, but that phase has changed. According to him, the focus is now on contributing in whatever way helps the team win matches. He added that while individual achievements like the Purple Cap are appreciated, they are no longer his primary motivation in a long tournament like the IPL.
RCB’s batting performance came under scrutiny after the team was bowled out for just 155 runs, a total that proved insufficient in modern high-scoring conditions. Bhuvneshwar acknowledged that the surface and match conditions have made chasing easier in most venues this season, especially with dew playing a major role in evening games. He admitted that losing the toss and being asked to bat first made the challenge tougher, but insisted the team still aimed to compete aggressively.

From a tactical perspective, Bhuvneshwar explained that RCB’s bowling strategy was built around taking wickets rather than purely defending runs. He said the presence of attacking options like Romario Shepherd and Suyash Sharma influenced their plan to go for breakthroughs early. However, the strategy did not fully pay off on the day, as Gujarat Titans managed to chase the target successfully despite the pressure created by RCB’s bowlers.
He also reflected on the batting unit’s inconsistency, noting that players like Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal, and Tim David have delivered strong performances throughout the season. He emphasised that in a long tournament, even strong batting line-ups can have off days, and it is important not to overreact to a single failure. According to him, balance between departments is key, and the team has often bailed out its bowlers in high-scoring matches earlier in the season.
For Gujarat Titans, the match was shaped by an all-round impact from Jason Holder, who contributed with crucial wickets and sharp fielding, along with a handy lower-order contribution. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award and underlined his value as a dual-impact player. As the IPL 2026 season progresses, RCB will look to regroup quickly and regain momentum in the playoff race, relying heavily on experienced performers like Bhuvneshwar to lead their bowling attack.
