Punjab Kings Captain Shreyas Iyer will Replicate Stellar Form, says Irfan Pathan
Irfan Pathan believes Shreyas Iyer can replicate IPL 2025 heroics, leading Punjab Kings in IPL 2026.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has backed Shreyas Iyer to replicate his impressive form from the IPL 2025 season for Punjab Kings, highlighting the captain’s proven ability in both franchise and international cricket. Last season, under Iyer’s leadership, Punjab Kings had a stellar run and finished as runners-up, and Pathan expressed confidence that the team’s retained core squad, along with new acquisitions, could continue its strong performance in IPL 2026.
Speaking to JioStar, Pathan emphasised Iyer’s consistency and pedigree, stating that the middle-order batter is a “proven cricketer” with a significant role in India’s one-day and T20 setups. “Shreyas Iyer has done really well in T20 cricket for Punjab Kings and for Team India as well. He’s a very important player, and there’s a place for him in the T20 setup,” Pathan said, adding that Iyer is well aware of his role and responsibilities.
Pathan also recalled Iyer’s memorable performance against Mumbai Indians in last season’s playoffs, highlighting a decisive qualifier knock. “That shot against Bumrah, gliding the yorker down towards third man, still stays with me. He has improved leaps and bounds, and I’m confident he can replicate the same performance this season,” Pathan remarked.

On Punjab Kings’ overall composition, Pathan expressed optimism, noting a balance between batting firepower and bowling depth. He praised the top-order combination of Iyer, Prabhsimran Singh, and Priyansh Arya, while also highlighting the finishing prowess of Marcus Stoinis and the all-round potential of Mitch Owen.
He further underlined the franchise’s strong fast-bowling attack, mentioning Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, and Lockie Ferguson as key assets. “If Owen clicks, picking the fast bowlers and the rest of the line-up won’t be difficult. They have good backups as well,” Pathan said.
With IPL 2026 on the horizon, Pathan’s endorsement of Iyer and the Punjab Kings squad reflects confidence in their ability to compete at the top level once again, with hopes that their combination of experienced leaders and emerging talent will deliver strong performances throughout the tournament.
