Praggnanandhaa Under Pressure as Candidates Tournament Reaches Midway
Praggnanandhaa seeks win as Candidates Tournament reaches midway stage.
Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa faces a crucial test in the Candidates Tournament as he goes up against Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri in the eighth round on Tuesday. The 20-year-old from Chennai, who currently sits third alongside Giri with 3.5 points from seven rounds, has just seven games left to turn his tournament around at the halfway stage. Praggnanandhaa began the event strongly with a victory over Giri in the opening round, but a string of draws and a loss to tournament leader Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan has left him chasing the frontrunner.
Sindarov has impressed throughout the tournament, accumulating six points with five wins and two draws, marking one of the most remarkable performances in the history of the Candidates. Fabiano Caruana of the United States remains the only contender within striking distance, trailing Sindarov by 1.5 points. Meanwhile, other participants including Hikaru Nakamura, Wei Yi, Matthias Bluebaum, and Andrey Esipenko are still searching for consistent form in the USD 700,000 event, which will determine the challenger to reigning world champion D Gukesh later this year.
In the upcoming round, Praggnanandhaa will play with the white pieces against Giri, while Sindarov faces Esipenko. Wei Yi and Matthias Bluebaum, both on three points, are set to battle each other, with Hikaru Nakamura close behind on 2.5 points. Esipenko, currently in last place, will need a strong turnaround to remain competitive in the tournament.

The women’s event, held alongside the main tournament, has seen surprising performances, particularly from Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine. Replacing Koneru Humpy, who withdrew citing security concerns, Muzychuk has taken the lead with 4.5 points from seven games. She will face Divya Deshmukh, who is currently on 3.5 points, in round eight, playing with the white pieces.
India’s R Vaishali is performing strongly in the women’s tournament, occupying second place on four points. She will play with the black pieces against Bibisara Assaubayeva of Kazakhstan, while Divya Deshmukh will also play black against leader Muzychuk. Other notable pairings include Aleksandra Goryachkina versus Kateryna Lagno and Zhongyi Tan versus Jiner Zhu, making round eight a critical stage in the women’s standings as well.
With half the tournament completed, both Indian players are under pressure to maintain consistency and capitalize on their opportunities. Praggnanandhaa’s quest for a second win remains central to his campaign, while Vaishali aims to build on her strong start. As the Candidates Tournament progresses, the coming rounds are set to be decisive in shaping the challengers for the men’s and women’s world championships.
