Mumbai Indians Retain Rohit Sharma, Bumrah; Trade in Shardul Thakur, Rutherford

Mumbai Indians retain core stars, release Topley and Karn Sharma, and execute trades ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.

Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) unveiled a squad of 20 retained players for IPL 2026, anchoring their rebuild around an unshakeable core of Hardik Pandya (captain), Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma while executing strategic trades to address death-bowling and middle-order gaps after a turbulent 2025 season that ended in sixth place. The franchise, which avoided major releases beyond eight peripheral names, enters the December 16 mini-auction in Abu Dhabi with a razor-thin INR 2.75 crore purse—the lowest among all teams—reflecting confidence in a revamped unit bolstered by incoming all-rounder Shardul Thakur (from Lucknow Super Giants in an all-cash deal), power-hitter Sherfane Rutherford (from Gujarat Titans for his INR 2.6 crore fee), and leg-spinner Mayank Markande (reacquired from Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 30 lakh). In a sentimental move, MI traded out Arjun Tendulkar to LSG, marking the end of the young pacer’s decade-long association with his father Sachin’s legacy franchise.

The retained roster blends iconic experience with emerging firepower: Pandya (INR 16.35 crore) leads a top order featuring Sharma (INR 16.5 crore), Yadav (INR 16 crore), and Varma (INR 8 crore), who collectively scored over 1,800 runs in 2025 despite team inconsistencies. Pace spearhead Bumrah (INR 18 crore) anchors a varied attack with Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, and Corbin Bosch, while spin options include Mitchell Santner and mystery bowler Allah Ghazanfar. Uncapped Indian depth comes from Naman Dhir, Raj Angad Bawa, Ashwani Kumar, Raghu Sharma, and wicketkeeper Robin Minz, complemented by overseas keeper Ryan Rickelton and all-rounder Will Jacks. The press release hailed the core quintet as “rock solid”, emphasising partnerships “meant to last” as MI chases a record-extending sixth title in a 74-match extravaganza.

Releases were pragmatic: English pacer Reece Topley (INR 75 lakh) and veteran spinner Karn Sharma were let go after limited impact, alongside backups Satyanarayana Raju, KL Shrijeet, Lizaad Williams, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Bevon Jacobs, and Vignesh Puthur—recouping approximately INR 5 crore. The trades, however, were masterstrokes: Thakur adds lower-order muscle and seam variation, Rutherford injects Caribbean flair after his 2025 heroics with GT, and Markande returns as a proven wrist-spinner for Wankhede’s turning tracks. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene praised the “smart business”, noting the purse constraints force precision bidding for one overseas pacer and a backup keeper to complete a 25-member squad.

With momentum from 2025’s late surge—winning five of their last seven—and a leadership duo of Pandya and Sharma reconciled after past tensions, MI aim to reclaim dominance at Wankhede, where their win rate exceeds 60%. The lean purse limits mega-signings but aligns with a philosophy of nurturing retained talent, positioning the Blue and Gold as calculated contenders in a landscape shaken by high-profile swaps like Jadeja-Samson. As the auction looms, MI’s blueprint—core stability plus targeted trades—signals a franchise poised to turn 2025’s inconsistencies into 2026’s triumph.
