IPL 2025: Nostalgic Move or Strategic Misstep? MS Dhoni Returns as CSK captain

As Dhoni takes the reins once again, questions arise about whether the move addresses the Chennai team's deeper issues or merely delays the inevitable rebuild

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has turned to its iconic leader, MS Dhoni, to captain the side for the remainder of IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out with an elbow fracture. While Dhoni's return to the helm brings a wave of nostalgia and hope for fans, it also raises concerns about whether this decision could be a step in the wrong direction for the struggling franchise.

CSK currently sits at the ninth spot on the points table, with just one win from five matches. The team has been plagued by inconsistent performances, particularly in the batting department, and the absence of Gaikwad, its main player at the top, will only exacerbate the situation.

Dhoni, at 43, is stepping into a high-pressure role in a team that has struggled to find its rhythm this season. While his leadership credentials are unquestionable, his recent batting form and fitness levels have been a concern.

CSK's decision to bring back Dhoni as captain could be seen as a reliance on past glories rather than addressing the team's structural issues. While Dhoni's experience is invaluable, the team needs a long-term vision to rebuild and compete effectively. The talismanic cricketer's batting position and form have been under scrutiny. Coming in at No. 5 or lower, he has struggled to make significant contributions with the bat. In a team already grappling with batting woes, this could further limit their ability to post or chase competitive totals.

With Gaikwad out, this could have been an opportunity for CSK to groom a younger leader who could take the team forward in the coming seasons. Instead, the decision to revert to Dhoni may delay the inevitable transition. But it should also be said, that save for Ravindra Jadeja, there are no other potential leaders in the CSK ranks. And the experiment with him backfired big time a couple of seasons back. It is a catch-22 situation for the 5-time champions of IPL.

The move places immense pressure on Dhoni to turn around a faltering campaign. While he has thrived under pressure in the past, the current scenario presents a different challenge, with a team lacking depth and consistency. His ability to inspire and extract the best from his players has been a hallmark of his captaincy, and CSK will hope that his return can spark a return to old glory.

As CSK prepares to face Kolkata Knight Riders in its match tonight, all eyes will be on Dhoni to see if he can replicate his past successes and guide the team out of their slump.
