Mohammad Kaif Warns IPL 2026 Playoff Race Still Open Despite Top Four Standings

Mohammad Kaif says no top four IPL team safe.

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has said that no team currently in the top four of the IPL 2026 points table can feel secure, as the playoff race tightens with several high-profile clashes still remaining. His remarks came after SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) suffered a heavy defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT), exposing concerns over adaptability in varying playing conditions.

SRH were bundled out for just 86 while chasing 169 against GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, marking one of their most disappointing batting performances of the season. The surface offered significant assistance to seamers, and SRH struggled to cope with the new-ball attack led by Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada, losing early wickets and failing to recover.

Speaking on a post-match analysis show, Kaif noted that while there is no immediate need for panic within the SRH camp, their inability to adjust to challenging conditions could become a critical issue. He stressed that adaptability across venues will be decisive in the final phase of the tournament, especially with away fixtures carrying significant playoff implications.

Kaif highlighted that SRH still have a viable path to a top-two finish but must deliver under pressure, particularly in their upcoming away match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He added that while SRH are strong at home and familiar with conditions in Hyderabad, their consistency away from home will determine their final standing in the league.

Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, strengthened their position at the top of the table with the victory, moving to 16 points with eight wins from 12 matches. Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar played key roles in rebuilding GT’s innings after early setbacks, helping them reach a competitive total of 168/5 before their bowlers dismantled the SRH batting order.

Kaif also cautioned against underestimating other contenders such as CSK and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), noting that the playoff picture remains highly fluid. With multiple teams still in contention and only a few matches remaining, he said the race for the top four is wide open and no side can afford complacency in the closing stages of the league phase.
