LSG Coach Langer Defends Pooran Selection in IPL 2026 Super Over

Pant trusts Pooran despite poor form; Langer defends IPL 2026 Super Over vs KKR.

India skipper Rishabh Pant has come under heavy criticism for sending Nicholas Pooran to face Sunil Narine in the Super Over during Lucknow Super Giants’  tense IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, a decision that backfired after Pooran was dismissed on the first ball. LSG needed nine runs off the Super Over but managed only one, allowing KKR to chase the target in a single delivery and escape with a narrow win. The choice has drawn blowback from fans and pundits, who questioned why Pooran—a batter with a documented weakness against Narine—was trusted with the strike in such a high‑pressure situation.

Post‑match, LSG head coach Justin Langer defended the call, explaining that the leadership wanted to back its “best player” even when form was not at its peak. Langer acknowledged that Pooran has struggled for runs in the tournament so far but said the management believed he had the temperament and firepower to handle a Super Over. “I know he hasn’t hit his form yet, and Nicky will be the first to admit that, but we thought if anyone can handle a Super Over, it’s Nicky Pooran,” Langer said. “You back your best players, right? That’s what you do.”

Statistics, however, highlight the gamble. Pooran has yet to score a single run against Sunil Narine in Super Over situations; in the CPL 2014 final, he was bowled by Narine in the first Super Over he faced, and in the IPL 2026 encounter, he was dismissed again on the opening ball. Between those two strikes, Pooran has faced seven balls from Narine in decider overs with no runs to show, underlining why many analysts felt a different captain might have chosen a batter with a more favourable record against the left‑arm spinner.

Langer also pointed to broader context, noting that Pooran has faced Narine more than almost any other batter in global cricket and that, in theory, that experience could make him better equipped to handle the pressure. “We knew that Sunil Narine was the bowler, and if you look at Nicky Pooran’s record, he’s seen Narine more than anyone in world cricket,” Langer added. “So we felt he was still the best, even though it didn’t come off.”

The episode has intensified scrutiny on Pant’s captaincy, with critics arguing that an over‑reliance on big‑name signings has not translated into consistent on‑field success for LSG. Sitting near the bottom of the table with only six games left, the franchise now faces an uphill task to keep its playoff hopes alive. For Pant, the Pooran–Narine Super Over call has become a talking point about risk‑taking, data‑aware decision‑making, and the fine line between backing a star player and ignoring uncomfortable patterns in high‑stakes cricket.
