Jofra Archer Nears IPL 2026 Purple Cap Leaders With Match-Winning Spell

Archer’s brilliant spell intensified IPL 2026 Purple Cap competition dramatically.

Jofra Archer produced a fiery spell with the new ball as Rajasthan Royals defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 47 runs in the IPL 2026 Eliminator at New Chandigarh on Wednesday, while also moving closer to the top of the tournament’s Purple Cap standings. Archer’s three-wicket haul helped derail SRH’s daunting chase of 244 and intensified the battle for the season’s leading wicket-taker award.

Defending a massive total, Rajasthan needed early breakthroughs to prevent Hyderabad’s explosive batting lineup from settling into the chase. Archer delivered immediately, dismissing Abhishek Sharma with just his second delivery of the innings. The England pacer cramped the opener with a sharp short ball that resulted in a glove down the leg side, sending Abhishek back for a duck and giving RR the perfect start.

Archer struck again in his next over by removing Ishan Kishan after cleverly varying his pace. Kishan attempted an attacking shot but ended up offering a simple catch in the covers. The standout moment of Archer’s spell came against Travis Head, when he unleashed a blistering 150.4 kmph delivery that shattered the Australian batter’s off stump. Attempting to back away and create room, Head was completely beaten by the pace and accuracy of the delivery.

The fast bowler finished with figures of three wickets as Sunrisers Hyderabad slumped to 57/4 inside the opening five overs of the chase. The early collapse left SRH struggling to recover, and Rajasthan eventually bowled them out for 196 in 19.2 overs to seal a place in Qualifier 2. Archer’s aggressive spell proved decisive in maintaining Rajasthan’s control throughout the contest.

The performance also significantly boosted Archer’s standing in the IPL 2026 Purple Cap race. The Rajasthan Royals pacer now has 24 wickets this season, placing him just two behind current leaders Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kagiso Rabada, who are tied at the top with 26 wickets each. Archer has established himself as one of the tournament’s most dangerous Powerplay bowlers, consistently providing breakthroughs with raw pace and disciplined lines.

With only Qualifier 2 and the IPL final remaining, the race for the Purple Cap is expected to go down to the final matches of the season. Archer and Rabada may hold a slight advantage given that both are set to feature in Qualifier 2 and could potentially play another game in the final, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Royal Challengers Bengaluru await their opponents in the title clash.
