Jamie Overton Breaks MS Dhoni’s CSK Record as Rajasthan Royals Dominate IPL 2026 Opener

Jamie Overton sets CSK record, scoring 43 off 36, but Rajasthan Royals win IPL 2026 opener.

England all-rounder Jamie Overton scripted history for Chennai Super Kings on Monday, scoring 43 off 36 balls from the number eight position during their IPL 2026 match against Rajasthan Royals. Overton’s innings came after CSK suffered a dramatic collapse to 57/6, helping the team cross the 100-run mark and breaking MS Dhoni’s previous record of 37 runs from the same batting position, set against Delhi Capitals in 2024.

Despite Overton’s historic effort, Chennai Super Kings were bowled out for 127, as Rajasthan Royals’ bowlers executed a disciplined attack to keep the scoreboard in check. The stage was set for RR’s explosive chase, anchored by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who delivered a blistering 52 off just 17 balls, the third fastest fifty in IPL history. His innings, featuring four fours and five sixes, propelled RR to 74/0 at the end of the power-play, effectively sealing the contest early.

Sooryavanshi’s dominance included a series of towering sixes and elegant drives, while Yashasvi Jaiswal (38 not out) played a watchful innings to complement the aggressive start. Skipper Riyan Parag (14 not out) also chipped in to ensure a comfortable eight-wicket victory with 47 balls to spare, giving RR a commanding start to their IPL 2026 campaign.

RR got off to a flying start as Matt Henry’s first over leaked 18 runs, with Sooryavanshi punishing every loose delivery. Even when Khaleel Ahmed thought he had Sooryavanshi lbw, a review revealed the ball was over leg stump, allowing the batter to continue his assault. Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad struggled to contain the onslaught, with Sooryavanshi racing to his quick fifty.

After Sooryavanshi’s dismissal at 52, Dhruv Jurel maintained the tempo with four boundaries before being dismissed. Parag and Jaiswal then guided the team home with minimal fuss, including a six from Parag and a finishing single from Jaiswal to cap a dominant run chase.

While Overton’s effort earned plaudits for CSK, the match highlighted RR’s superior performance with both bat and ball. The Royals’ aggressive approach in both innings set the tone for the season, demonstrating their intent to be a major force in IPL 2026, while CSK will need to rebuild confidence and depth in their batting lineup after a challenging start.
