Irfan Pathan to Ruturaj Gaikwad: Move to Number Three or Change Your Approach at the Top
Irfan Pathan questions Ruturaj Gaikwad's cautious opening approach and recommends a move to number three.
Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan has weighed in on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s batting approach in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026, suggesting that the Chennai Super Kings skipper may need to reconsider his role in the batting order. The remarks come after Gaikwad’s cautious knock against the Delhi Capitals.
Gaikwad scored 15 runs off 18 balls in that match, adopting a measured approach that prioritised wicket preservation over aggressive stroke play. While his control percentage remained high, the innings raised questions about whether such a strategy suits an opening batsman in the fast-paced T20 format.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Pathan suggested that if Gaikwad intends to continue with a conservative approach, he would be better suited to batting at number three. According to him, an opener is expected to set the tempo early, and a lack of attacking intent at the top could impact the team’s overall momentum.

As Chennai Super Kings look to stabilise their campaign this season, Gaikwad’s batting position and approach remain key talking points. Whether he adapts his style as an opener or shifts down the order could play a crucial role in shaping the team’s performances in upcoming matches.
